Cable Suspension for Plumbing

A Modern Alternative to Hangers and Rod

Plumbers have traditionally used threaded rod, clevis hangers, and strut to support pipe runs. While these methods work, they’re often slow to install, require heavy overhead lifting, and make adjustments difficult once the pipe is in place. Cutting threaded rod on-site can also be messy, noisy, and unsafe.

Cable suspension systems offer a faster, lighter, and more flexible solution. With pre-engineered kits, steel cable, and locking wire fasteners, pipe can be supported securely while saving time and labor on the jobsite.

Where Cable Suspension Works Best in Plumbing

Cable systems can support a wide variety of plumbing installations, including:

  • Copper and PEX water lines
  • Cast iron and PVC drain, waste, and vent (DWV) piping
  • Steel piping
  • Hot water return and circulation piping
  • Hydronic piping systems (chilled water, heating loops)
  • Specialty piping (condensate drains, chemical lines, etc.)

Benefits for Plumbing Contractors

Switching from threaded rod and hangers to cable suspension delivers clear jobsite advantages:

  • Faster Installation – No cutting or threading rod, fewer tools needed.
  • Reduced Labor Costs – One installer can often set up supports solo.
  • Easy Adjustments – Fine-tune pipe slope or height instantly with wire fasteners.
  • Cleaner Look – Slim cable leaves a less cluttered ceiling space.
  • More Clearance – Slim suspension profile is ideal in tight corridors or congested ceilings.
  • Improved Safety – Less overhead cutting and drilling, fewer sparks and hazards.

Installation Examples

  • PEX water lines run in parallel with multiple suspension points.
  • PVC DWV piping supported cleanly with cable instead of bulky clevis hangers.
  • Copper water supply lines.

Load Capacities & Compliance

Cable suspension systems are engineered for a wide range of pipe sizes and materials. Most solutions are tested and rated for common plumbing application loads.

Many systems comply with MSS-SP58, NFPA, IPC, and ASME guidelines when installed correctly. Always check manufacturer specifications for maximum spacing and allowable loads.

Common Questions

Can I hang fire protection systems / sprinklers with cable?
NO. It is currently not allowed in the United States to hang fire protection systems with cable. NFPA 13, Section 9.1.1.2 states that sprinkler system piping must be supported by listed hangers, braces and components designed for use with sprinkler pipe. Cable systems have yet to meet the UL/FM criteria to become a listed component.

Can I hang cast iron or heavy pipe with cable suspension?
Yes, provided the correct cable gauge and fasteners are used. Always check load ratings.

Does it work for sloped piping?
Yes. Wire fasteners allow quick slope adjustments for drains, vents, and condensate piping.

What tools do I need?
Usually just cable cutters and the supplied wire fasteners. Power tools may be required depending on your anchoring method.

Will cable work with clevis hangers?
Yes. Typically single channel fasteners can be used with clevis hangers. Be sure to check safe working load (SWL) as well as thread size of fastener to ensure compatibility with your clevis hanger.
